What is Bone Grafting?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure in which donor bone tissues are used to supplement the structures of the teeth and jaw to provide support where bone loss has occurred. A bone graft is traditionally done with banked cadaver bone. This bone material has become the new standard of care because it is safe, effective and readily available while reducing patient discomfort. 

How Do I Know If I Need a Bone Graft?

Dr. Jammal and his team may recommend a bone graft for the following reasons:

  • You’re receiving a dental implant. Oftentimes, if a tooth is missing and needs to be replaced with a dental implant, a bone graft is needed to create a strong base for the implant.
  • You’re struggling with gum disease. Gum disease doesn’t just affect the gums – it also affects the integrity of the teeth. Patients with gum disease may need a bone graft to supplement tooth loss.

You’re experiencing bone loss. Bone grafts are used to supplement the bone tissues in any structure of the mouth, including the jaw. If you’re experiencing bone loss or tooth loss due to age or disease, a bone graft can be used to help support these structures.

What Can I Expect During My Bone Grafting Procedure?

Your bone graft will be performed by Dr. Jammal and his expert dental team in our comfortable office. Before your bone graft begins, Dr. Jammal will administer an anesthetic to your treatment area. Once the area is numb, Dr. Jammal will then begin to thoroughly clean your treatment area. Synthetic or natural bone tissue will then be placed into your treatment area. Over the course of several months the bone graft will be replaced by your own bone, building or maintaining the previously deficient site.
